MANAGEMENT OF INSECT PESTS OF CARROT

carrot may be infested by a relatively small number of damaging pest insect species that can reduce both quality and yield. Following are some of the major insect pests, which are limiting the production of carrots.
 

Aphids:

Symptoms:

1.  Aphids of nymphs and adults stage suck the plant sap usually on the young growing and succulent plant parts.
2.  The young leaves, stems, buds, flowers, fruits or peaches gets affected.
3. The plants which are attacked by aphids show the symptoms of twisted, curled or swollen branches, leaves and stems.

Management:

Spray with Actara-0.5gm/lt or Dhanpreet -0.5gm/lt+Econeem plus-1ml/lt   of water

Leaf hoppers (Plant hoppers):

Symptoms:
 

1. The wedge shaped pale green leafhoppers lay eggs on the leaves.
2. Later both adults and nymphs suck the sap from undersides of the leaves, from green stems and remove tissues from infested parts.
3. While infesting they secrete and leave toxic sticky saliva called honeydew that may cause sooty mold to develop.
4. The leaves of infested plants turn yellow with white spots,get twisted, and the plants become stunted.Under severe infestations the leaves may get burned which is often referred as “hopper burn”/"Tip burn”
    

Carrot Weevils:

Symptoms:

1. Irregular dark grooves in zig-zag pattern on roots.
2. Leaves of the plant may yellow.
3. Adult insect is a dark colored beetle.
4. larvae are white to pinkish white C-shaped grubs with a yellow-brown head.

problem of Nitrogen deficiency

Description

The Number and size of leaves were reduced and the pale green color of the leaves change to yellow roots because thin, stiff and fibrous.

Description

Sclerotinia Rot or White mold: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

Symptoms

1. Carrots may show little or no damage incidence in the field but following washing and storage white mold outbreaks often occur on the stored roots.
2. Only a small percentage of the roots may be initially infected but the fungus mycelium can move very rapidly from carrot to carrot.
3. In a matter of weeks, the whole storage container may become a mass of white mold and black sclerotia surrounding each and every carrot.
